The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) and Trade of the Australian government has issued a travel warning about Nepal for its citizens today. You can read the travel advice in the website of DFAT. The advice states, " We advise Australians against travel to Nepal because of the dangerous security situation created by widespread civil unrest."
In the Official website of Nepal Tourism Board, I found that in March 2006 726 visitors from Australia came to Nepal by air. This figure was 59.6% more than March 2005. It was 3% of the total tourists coming to Nepal by air in March 2006 but surely other countries like New Zealand and UK will follow Nepalese example.
India, Japan and UK are the top 3 countries from which tourists come in largest number to Nepal and tourists from these 3 countries accounted for nearly half (47%) of all tourists on March 2006. Right now, an anti Indian sentiment is working among many people in Nepal because of the fact that Indian government has not openly supported the pro democracy movement in Nepal. China has also asked its nationals to leave Nepal immediately.
So, no news is good news for the tourism sector of Nepal at this moment.
