Bird flu and human tragedy in South Asia
In internet there are some excellent blogs about bird flu updates. H5N1: News and Resources about Avian Flu is one of them and I visit it on almost everyday these days. Another blog is Pandemic Virus Facts and Information and another one is Bird Flu Monitor. All of them are excellent blogs with round the clock updates from various sources around the world. However, most of the time, the media is only talking about the outbreaks of bird flu in different countries and if there is any human infection then it gets a lot of media coverage. However, there is not adequate coverage of the plight of the poor poultry farmers as a result of the bird flu.

I do not want to downplay the threat of bird flu virus. The threat is real and if there is a large scale infection among human beings then thousands or even millions of people may die within a short span of time. Like many people, I wish that government and scientists of all the countries in the world join hands to carry out research and find a way to eliminate the threat caused by bird flu. However, I just feel that the plight of the South Asian poor farmers is very tragic. They are losing their chickens in thousands without receiving any compensation. Suffering huge losses, several farmers in India have committed suicide and if the situation becomes worse then most probably we will see more deaths from India and other South Asian countries. I just wish that these lives can be saved.
