![]() All of a sudden, we could hear that there have been 100-plus bird flu outbreaks in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). This news came not from Myanmar government but from He Changchui, FAO representative for Asia-Pacific. According to UN experts, Myanmar lacks expertise and trained people to tackle the bird flu crisis and the government of Myanmar is hardly doing anything to fight with the problem. In the website of BBC, I found the opinion of Mr He that awareness level in Myanmar about bird flu is low and it is not easy to find accurate and comprehensive information. The military government of Myanmar has been facing isolation from the international community because of its oppression against pro-democracy movement lead by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Naturally, the consumption of poultry items has decreased in Myanmar in the last few weeks. The people of Myanmar face the possibility of a disaster because of the indifferent attitude of the government. The neighboring countries, Thailand, India and Bangladesh will be now worried that bird flu does not spread to their land from Myanmar.
Myanmar is already an isolated place and this bird flu crisis will make it more isolated which will bring only more misery to the people of Myanmar.
