Today thousands of people celebrated their victory in the streets of many cities including the capital, Katmandu. The King has backed down and has reinstated the Parliament and the politicians belonging to the 7 parties will now take the decisions about the future of the country. Girija Prasad Koirala is going to lead the country as the new Prime Minister for the time being. There is a growing sentiment to abolish monarchy but I do not think that this will happen at the moment. Secondly, the Maoist rebels have denounced the steps taken by the King.
The common people in Nepal have now high expectations about the future of the country. They came to the street and fought against injustice. Their main goal was to see Nepal as a prosperous country. They are fed up with the terrible condition of the Nepalese economy as the growth rate is hovering around 2%-3% annually. Because of political instability and violence the tourism sector is not having its full potential. Rising price of oil in the international market is a big headache for the ordinary people as they have to ultimately bear the burden.
The past history of Nepal does not make very excited about its prospect for the future. The key challenge for the country is the unity of the politicians remaining intact. The rise of King Gyanendra and the Maoist rebels have taken place because of bitter rivalry among the leading politicians in the country. Let us pray that this time the politicians learn from the past.
