Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is among the most iinfluencial trade associations in Bangladesh. Currently, Bangladesh gets most of its export income from the ready made garments (RMG) sector and members of BGMEA contribute directly to this. BGMEA was established in 1977 with just 19 members. This figure has now grown into around 3,500.
Bangladesh is an agriculture based country and even 2 decades ago the main sources export income were jute, tea and fish. Fortunately, for the country when the export earning through these traditional items slumped, the country found success in RMG sector and today more than 1 million workers are employed here and most of them are women.
BGMEA looks after the interest of its members. Its office bearers are elected by the members and they play very influential role in the economy of Bangladesh. It publishes a newsletter and it is available in its website. BGMEA also organizes different events in home and abroad.
