Bird flu has not become a serious crisis for Pakistan but with each passing day, the condition seems to be getting worrisome for the Pakistani government. Nearly 25,000 chickens have been culled at two farms near Islamabad today. Pakistan's Health Minister Muhammad Naseer Khan has announced that so far no infection of bird flu on humans has been found in Pakistan. Mr. Khan also said that only the H5 strain was detected among chickens and the H5N1 virus was not found in Pakistan. However, the Health Ministry has proposed that all schools be closed for one week in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
I got happy to find that a poultry farm owner has been given Rs 200,000 for the 3,500 chickens that were culled from his farm a few days ago. Well, this man will get some respite and he will not think of committing suicide like some Indian farmers have already done after suffering huge financial losses. However, if bird flu turns out to be serious then I am sure that Pakistani government would become unable to provide compensation to each and every poultry farm owner.
I just wish that UN or WHO come forward to generate a global fund to save the farmers from committing suicide. Do you agree with this idea?
