![]() If you are a sugar trader, the best market for you at this moment may be Pakistan because Pakistan is in desperate need of sugar. People in South Asia love sweets and if you ever come to my country, Bangladesh you will get amazed to see so many sweet shops. For example, within 2 kilometers of my home there are more than 10 sweet shops. I know Pakistani people are fan of sweets too and you can find some of the recipes of Pakistani (sweet) foods in this website. The local production of sugar is failing to keep pace with the demand and that is why Pakistan imported nearly 200,000 tons of refined (sugar). This year local sugar production may even decrease by 1 million ton to 46 million ton. Many farmers are switching to alternative crops like wheat that may bring more cash for them.
No government in South Asia, wants to let the price of sugar go out of hand as it may arouse popular dissatisfaction and that is why now Pakistan government is desperately trying to collect sugar from international markets at a reasonable price.
I wish that next year the Pakistani government encourages the farmers more to produce more sugarcane.
