Pakistan is not a major producer of tea but that does not discourage the people of Pakistan from getting too much addicted to tea. Pakistan imports more than 100 million KG of tea through the legal channel. Majority portion of tea is imported from Kenya. On the other hand, according to Pakistan Tea Association (PTA), 33 million KG of tea entered Pakistan illegally in FY 2005. Pakistanis are fan of Kenyan tea and on the other hand until now to them Indian tea was a bit expensive. This year, a devastating drought in Kenya has seriously damaged tea production and as a result of shortage in production price has become too high.
Against this backdrop, Pakistani tea traders are seriously considering to import tea from India. A 15 member delegation from Pakistan is going to visit India from tomorrow and if everything goes well then Pakistan will import more tea from India from now. The members of the delegation will stay in India for 8 days and visit different tea growing states of India and will meet with Indian producers.
