To the outside world, Pakistan is often known for violence and military rule. Many people outside of Pakistan have the perception that Pakistan is solely a Muslim country. Also, in the international media, we hardly see any substantial coverage on the tourism sector of Pakistan. On the other hand, Indian tourism is widely promoted by the Indian and International media. Well, we cannot blame the international media as the Pakistani government until now has not done enough for the country's tourism sector. However, the decision makers in Pakistan have realized the value of tourism sector and now are trying to make amends for the lost years. In the fiscal year 2004-2005 (July 2004- June 2005), about 6,50,000 visitors visited Pakistan and in the current fiscal year (ending in June 30 2006), this number may reach to 1 million.
Pakistani government is now in serious negotiation with the Indian government about relaxation of visa procedures for the citizens of two countries. Organized groups from India and Pakistan have to wait for 2 months to get visa clearance to travel to each other's country. Pakistan government now wants to reduce it to just 3-4 days. If it is implemented then Pakistan can expect influxes of tourists from India to visit the country.
For decades, the Pakistani government failed to realize the potential of tourism sector. I am happy that now they have realized their mistake.
