Four South Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) are going to jointly host World Cup Cricket 2011. International Cricket Council (ICC) executive board meeting was held in Dubai (UAE) today (Sunday) and the South Asian countries defeated a joint bid of Australia and New Zealand. There were 10 votes for the South Asian blog while Australia and New Zealand got just 3 votes. India cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah has informed the media that in the World Cup Cricket 2011, 51 matches will take place and India will host 22 matches, while Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will host 14, 9 and 6 matches respectively. Australia and New Zealand have been awarded the 2015 tournament and England is going to host in 2019.
Cricket boards of Australia and New Zealand were optimistic that they stood in a good chance of getting the 2011 tournament because they last hosted the tournament in 1992 while South Asian countries hosted it in 1996. However, cricket boards of the South Asian countries came up with the logic that most of the revenue in the cricketing world comes from them their markets and that is why they should host more frequently. It seems that ICC officials agreed with this logic.
Personally, I am happy that my country, Bangladesh is going to host matches of World Cup cricket for the first time in its history.
