These days, when I do any search in Google news about Sri Lanka, I can mainly see the dark possibility of the beginning of another phase of violent unrest in the on going civil war between the government and the Tamil tigers. However, life goes on even amidst the worst kind of warfare and for Sri Lanka, some things are moving in the right direction. Well, at least tourism is growing and Sri Lanka is now hopeful that by 2010 the country will have 1 million tourists visiting the island country. In the first quarter of this year (2006), 159,664 tourists came to Sri Lanka. This is a 27.5% increase from the same time of last year (2005). Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) is expecting that this year 600,000 tourists will visit the country. This is quite impressive not only for the civil war but also for the fact that Sri Lanka was one of the Tsunami affected countries.
All these are good signs for the Sri Lankan economy. The economy is suffering from the ongoing civil war on the one hand and on the other hand, the rise of oil in the international market is a heavy burden for the country. Hopefully tourism can make a difference.
