![]() Who does not like the rising sun? Especially, media loves the rising sun few shades more than others. So, when I read the news that BBC was going to air special programs for a whole week (22 to 28 May 2006) called 'Emerging Giants' on the economic rise of India and China, I did not feel surprised at all. Of course, this is great news for India and Indian companies will hope to cash into the new found celebrity status of their country. Personally, I am happy too but I think that India has to go a long yet to catch up China and India has a daunting challenge of improving the condition of its rural areas. A few days ago, I wrote about World Bank report that stated the existence of 60 million malnourished and underweight children in India. I wish that BBC World service portrays the other side of India and China too. Most probably it will. I touched it from Jill McGivering's analysis about these two countries in an article titled, 'Growth tests Asian giants' strength' in which she wrote:
"By contrast, rural populations are increasingly frustrated, aware of the boom elsewhere but feeling hopelessly excluded from the new wealth.
Without education, many born into villages have little opportunity of finding a useful place for themselves in the new economy.
In both China and India, some less accessible rural areas are increasingly denuded, maintained by the old and very young as the able-bodied workers head for the cities."
Not a rosy picture at all.
What do you think?
