![]() Bhutan is one of the poorest countries in the world while Germany is one of the richest. So, how can Bhutan be too expensive for many German tourists! I think, in the world, Germans are the top admirer of tourism. So, when I was reading this report with the headline, 'Germans find Bhutan expensive' in kuenselonline.com, I surely got surprised and then did some online research in some websites related to tourism in Bhutan. The main problem seems to be in the fact that a tourist has to pay $200 tariff daily while visiting Bhutan. Thus if you travel 5 days, the tariff would $1000. Well, for a person like me, it is simply out of my reach and I feel some consolation that this tariff is difficult for many Germans too. However, still, Bhutan gets largest number of its European tourists from Germany. Out of 5,374 European tourists in 2005, 1,042 were from Germany.
Well, still, I am very happy that Bhutanese government is very strict about conservation of nature. The government has kept this tariff to limit the number of tourists and thus the environment and nature of Bhutan suffer very less compared to many other countries. However, the question is: How long Bhutan can afford not to give in to the temptation of earning foreign exchange through tourism.
