When I search for materials in Internet about Bhutan, I often feel disappointed to find that most of the news items are centered on portraying Bhutan as a backward country where time is standing still. Well, things are changing and Bhutan is slowly moving towards modernization of economy. Right now, in the capital Thimpu, the 4th annual Bhutan Trade Show is going on and every day (it started on 9 May 2006), a significant number of visitors are turning out to the see the products and services of 55 companies of Bhutan, India and Pakistan.
Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and new wave Company of India are the joint organizers of the trade show and the organizers are optimistic that 100,000 thousand visitors will visit the show that will finish on 14 May 2006. Carpets, furniture, garments and textiles, handicrafts, pharmaceutical products and even cars are displayed in the trade show. For the city dwellers in Thimpu, it is a great place to have some entertainment too.
I think Bhutan is advancing and it is a matter of time that they will adopt modern economic system. I just only wish that the country can stick to its principle of protecting environment instead of becoming aggressive to amass wealth.
