GM India launching `Chevrolet Spark' Next Year: Targets production of 200,000 cars in India
At last, General Motors bosses have decided that India is too an attractive market to let the competitors move freely. GM India has announced its plan to pursue the Indian market very aggressively from now so that by 2010, it can have a good share in Indian automobile market. President and Managing Director of GM India, Rajeev Chaba, today talked to the journalists in the Indian city of Gujrat about the future plans of GM India. GM India is expecting that its mini-car 'Chevrolet Spark' will create a sensation in the Indian market and will put a serious challenge to the mini cars offered by its competitors.  GM is going to launch this mini car in 2007. GM India is also launching Optra SRV and Aveo U-VA models in the coming months in India. I am happy to see that GM India is now trying cash in the market opportunities in India.

I am even happier that GM is now seriously trying to expand its production capacity in India. GM India is now investing Rs 100 crore to increase its production capacity of its Halol plant. GM India has set a target of producing 200,000 cars in India by 2010 and to meet this target the company is even contemplating the idea of setting up another manufacturing plant in India.

Indian decision makers will certainly be overjoyed at this news as the Indian government is pushing very hard to create more jobs in the manufacturing sector.

I personally feel that GM has been a little bit late in realizing and responding to the market demand of India.

What do you think?
