Yesterday, I wrote that the bilateral trade between Korea and India is expected to reach to $10 billion by the end of this year. So, I think some of you may get surprised that bilateral trade between India and Myanmar has not even reached to $1billion yet although India has direct border with Myanmar. India-Myanmar Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting finished yesterday and India's Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath and Myanmar's Commerce Minister Tin Naing Thein co-chaired the meeting for their respective countries. Bilateral trade between the two countries was only $500 million in 2004-05. India wants to increase it significantly by opening up a new post in the border and also diversifying the commodities. India is also keen to import natural gas from Myanmar. On the other hand, Myanmar wants Indian cooperation in IT and telecommunication sector.
It is nice to see that India is pushing its economic agenda very aggressively and is trying to increase economic cooperation with many countries in Asia.
