Nepal has now got some sound political and social stability after many years. Last month, the world witnessed a pro-democratic revolution in the country and now the attention is turning to Nepalese economy which is indeed in a miserable state. Nepalese economy suffered very badly in the last month's pro-democracy movement and a decade long Maoist rebellion has ravaged the rural economy. So, the government now needs huge fund to carry out projects on reconstruction works. So, Nepal is seeking the support of the donor countries for funds. Nepalese government is seeking a fund between US$1.25 to $1.50 billion from donors. However, I have not seen any substantial pledge from any donor country so far.
The International Crisis Group (Crisis Group), an independent think tank, has come forward and called on the international community to support Nepal now. I am quoting from its website:
" Over the international community. Nepal is particularly exposed to external influence. Sandwiched between regional superpowers and long dependent on foreign aid, its leaders and people have often looked to outsiders at times of crisis. This time India, the U.S. and some European powers did help to create the environment for a democracy movement but were brushed off when they appeared to press for an unpopular solution to end the crisis."
Nepal has the best opportunity to have political and social stability. However, political stability can never sustain without economic progress. It is a reality that Nepalese government has hardly any money to even support itself- let alone spend 1 billion dollar on reconstruction projects. So, only the generous support of donor countries can make a difference for the Nepalese people now.
