Nepal's success in Biogas: A great Example to follow
Nepal does not have any oil or gas and the country has to import almost all of its energy needs. The rising price of oil in international market has put the country in serous stress about its oil import bills and for the ordinary people it is even harder to keep in pace with the rising oil price in the international market. However, Nepal seems to be making headways in using locally produced biogas. You will be amazed to know Nepal has passed both China and India in terms of number of biogas plants per capita. Biogas Sector Partnership (BSP) Nepal has been extremely successful in pursuing the people living in rural areas to use their cow dung and other waste materials to produce biogas and now there are 145,000 biogas units in the country (roughly 15% of Nepalese households have biogas). Biogas Sector Partnership (BSP) is planning to install 83,500 more biogas units in Nepal by 2009.

Use of biogas in Nepal is saving the country 400,000 tons of firewood and 4.75 million liters of kerosene every year. Use of biogas means that Nepal is having less CO2 emissions. So, now the project of BSP is going to get money from the World Bank's Community Development Carbon Fund.

I just have one thing to say here. Biogas is mainly used in Nepal for cooking purposes. I think that Nepal government and foreign donors should come forward to support Biogas Sector Partnership (BSP) so that biogas can be used to provide some electricity to the rural people. Nevertheless, Nepalese achievement regarding biogas should be an example to every country in Asia and if a very poor country like Nepal can use biogas so successfully there is every reason that China and India can do it too.

I was amazed and proud to know that Nepal was doing such a great job in Biogas Area. I was aware that in past Nepalese government, NGOs and INGOs were doing some work in that field but I had not imagined it to be so successful (15% of the total household consumption... thats an impressive figure). Thanks for the article.
