Indian has expressed its commitment to support Nepal both politically and economically and as a part of it today Indian government announced a 10 billion rupees ($218m) aid package for Nepal. GP Koirala, Nepalese Prime Minister after ending 4 day India visit is returning home perhaps with a very happy heart. India is also going to waiver Nepalese loan for defense purchases. Almost all the aid will come for development of infrastructures like building roads and improving roads and railways, oil pipeline and even building an airport.
This is a welcome relief for Nepal government but the billion dollar question is- is it enough for Nepalese economy? Nepalese economy is lacking growth in the past few years whereas all the countries in South Asia are witnessing good economic growth. What the country needs now is positive economic growth in the short term and for it Nepalese government needs a lot of cash right away. So, naturally, Nepalese government needs more foreign aid beyond India. I wish that major donor countries like Japan, USA, UK and other European countries come forward to assist Nepal like India. Foreign aid is a necessary requirement for Nepalese democracy to have a smoother journey.
