Indian North-Eastern region is perhaps one of the most beautiful and unexplored areas in the world. Here, you can find dense forest, high mountains, large rivers and waterfalls and recent economic success of India has not touched this area yet. Thus, this area is ideal for the rats to flourish and it seems that rats have flourished way too much in the recent days in the States of Mizoram and Manipur because of the flowering of a certain kind of bamboo crop which takes place after every 5 decades. Rats love this and thus the number of rats has reached into an explosive level. Rats are destroying all the other plants and millions of villagers are now virtually helpless against their onslaught. The civilian administration is trying its best to curb the threat but seems to have failed miserably so far. This incident reminds me of the cartoon show; 'Tom and Jerry', where Tom, the cat always fails to capture and destroy Jerry, the rat. Well, for the poor villagers, it is not so amusing and in fact the last time the flowers of the bamboos matured, there was a famine in this region.
Now, out of desperation, Indian army has been called to help. Indian army in this region has been remain engaged for fighting against separatist movement for ages and now the rebel forces are no match to the threat posed by the rats in this region. I guess even they have started to fight against the rats too and thus for the time being, every one has common agenda.
I really feel a lot of sympathy for the common people living in this region. They are among the poorest in India and this region is one of the least developed areas of India.
