![]() I must call it the most significant step towards modernization by Bhutanese government. At last, Bhutan's government has decided to open up the telecom sector. In fact, Ministry of Communications has invited global bids to offer mobile phone services. You can find detailed information at the website of the Ministry. Right now, Bhutan Telecom Limited is the only player in the telecom and internet field. Bhutan has nearly 40,000 fixed phones and another 50,000 mobile phone subscribers. This is not bad considering the fact that the population of the country is just over 600,000. However, there is a lot of room for growth and Bhutanese government feels that the time has come to invite private companies.
This initiative of Bhutanese government is surely going to increase the number of mobile phone users and most probably, the users will get better service and more modern and sophisticated technology. However, I would like to see improvement in internet facility too. Perhaps, more than mobile phone, Bhutanese people now need better and cheaper internet facility.
