![]() When Asian Development Bank (ADB) gets satisfied with any of its member countries, it expresses its satisfaction by increasing the amount of loan. Pakistani government has been able to get into the good book of ADB by presenting a budget for fiscal year 2006-07 which contains a number reform measures. So, ADB is going to give Pakistan a record amount of $1.5 billion assistance in 2006. This shows that the economic reforms carried out by Pakistani Government are becoming very popular among donor organizations like ADB and World Bank. A few days ago, I wrote about World's Bank lending Pakistan huge amount of money. ADB is now interested to support Pakistan in projects related to social sector and good governance. One area that I like to see ADB supports Pakistan is generation of electricity as the country needs additional electricity desperately to sustain its high economic growth.
ADB is also happy with Pakistan because of the privatization initiatives taken by the Pakistani government. I think that among South Asian countries, Pakistan is now most aggressively pursuing privatization process of state owner organizations.
I have just one concern. I wish that the money that will be available through ADB loan will be spent for the best interest of the common people.
