![]() The answer to this question is an emphatic 'no'. Football is no where near to cricket in Indian in terms popularity. However, it seems that football is gaining on cricket in terms of TV ratings. I found this in the website of The Hindu:
"The opening match between Germany and Costa Rica on June 9 garnered a TV rating of 3.43 whereas the Test match could manage a TVR of just 2.8, ESPN-Star Sports claimed."
What is so fascinating about the news is that World Cup Football 2006 is attracting viewers from all over India. In India, West Bengal, Kerala and Goa are states in which football is perhaps more popular than cricket.
I am happy with this news but the above TV rating does not convince me because India was playing a match against West Indies in West Indies and the match place at night time in India. If it was an Indian-Pakistan match then I would surely get excited that football is on the way of overtaking cricket in India. I just wish that FIFA plans something special for India. A market of 1 billion people is just too big to let it go.
Don’t you think so?

Don't get too excited about football taking the place of cricket lovely cricket anwhere where cricket is dominant. We cricket lovers follow football once every 4 years and we acknowledge that it is the most popular sport in the world. Cricket is a different sport and is closer to baseball and is more time consuming that almost any other sport. Once you develop an appreciation for a game like cricket, there is no going back. So, sit back enjoy the football - it's great.
I look forward to the World Cup Cricket in the WI (my home) next year.

Hmmm... I don't know much about cricket but I guess football is really making big waves in terms of TV ratings. Maybe people are just curious about the fuss which is World Cup 2006.
Hey nice analysis. Why dnt u post it to www.merinews.com. Its a citizen journalism portal.
A soccer fan
i really want to see the indian football team in world cup matches.
because i love the football. our main drawbacks are poor coaching, lack of facilities and our politics,,,, you no why politics, because our football fedration chairperson is Mr. Priyranjan Das Munshi, he is politician, not football legend and he don't have any rights to spoil the indian football. he should be down. then after we can see our football on world map.
India, as far as I know, is a cricket freak. even if they carry the world cup-which is not very likely at present-the love for cricket will take time to degrade
