I am happy to find that millions of Indians are now watching World Cup Football 2006 matches. The size of viewers is still some behind compared to World Cup Cricket matches but that is understandable. When it comes to popularity, football is in a distant second best compared to cricket in India. Indian national team is a very strong contender in World cricket. In the last 6 events of World Cup Cricket, India became champion once, runners up once and played in the semifinal twice. On the other hand, India could never qualify for World Cup Football. ESPN Star Sports has secured the TV rights for broadcasting matches in South Asia.
ESPN is getting fairly good amount of revenue from advertisements. Rs 45 crore is not a bad figure considering the lack of popularity of football in India. However, what is important is the increase in viewer ship of World Cup Football matches in ESPN Star Sports.
Not everyone is happy from ESPN's success- especially the football fans. Since ESPN is a cable channel, people who do not have access to cable television will have to remain satisfied by watching a limited number of games in their terrestrial channels.
