Mobile Phone User Base: India joins 100 million Club
The announcement came from Indian government and of course, this is something that Indian leaders should cheer about. 100 million club in mobile phone user base is a very prestigious one as only China, USA, Russia and Japan are the members of this league. Reduction of tariffs on mobile phones and low call rate along with very intense competition among the mobile phone operators to capture more market share have resulted into making mobile phones affordable to millions of people in India. In May 2006, Indian mobile phone operators had 4.3 million new users.
Of the 100 million mobile phone users, nearly 75% users have GSM connection while the rest 25% are users of CDMA technology.

What made me happy is to know that India has a teledensity of 13.54%. Only two years ago, it was only 7.08%. Now, Indian government's target is to have 250 million phones (land phone and mobile phone) by the end of 2007. Currently, India has nearly 150 million phones. So, I guess that mobile phone companies will enter into further price cut to capture more market share. If this happens, the consumers will surely enjoy their mobile phone more.

Affordable mobile phones + low cost call rates = a really promising market. 3G cell phones are currently the hype in my country but its prices are still soaring high although some of the color lcd phones have drastically lowered its prices, perhaps to sell all the stocks out to give way for the new high-priced but highly sought after models.

IMHO, this has more to do with population and GDP than with prestige. All of these nations, including India, are in the top 10 in both categories.

It is a very valuable achievment for Indian mobile sector. I think Indian government is very flexible to make chances to mobile phone companies to enter so the competiton has been grown up and people become capable of bearing a mobile phone. The teledensity rate 13.54% is also very important for the development of communication technology.
