Of all the royal families in the world, members of the Royal family of Nepal are perhaps in the most miserable condition. Very few people in the country respect them. In fact, those people who were close to the royal family are often the target of public fury. In the last 4 years, the royal family and its allies had total control of the country thanks to the support of the army. The budget for the royal family was Nepali Rs.126.3 million in 2001-02 fiscal year and last year it became Rs.751.2 million. The members of the royal family were great fan of traveling to different countries and a lot of taxpayers' money was wasted for the fanfare of the royal family. Even the palace had 900 employees.
After the pro-democracy revolution of this April, things have totally changed for the royal family. Now, the new Nepalese government is cutting back 300 employees. Secondly, Nepalese royal family is going to get a nominal amount of money in the coming budget. All these matters have made King Gyanendra sick and depressed. He spends all his days alone and tries to find out what went wrong and who are to blame for this miserable condition.

I guess he should blame his family's long tradition of "royal pain in the ass." Imagine frivolously spending the taxpayers' money just for their royal escapades? Society is changing, people are changing, and they grow more and more aware of their rights as a citizen and and an active member of society.
