![]() Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is often considered to be an important indicator for measuring an economy. For decades South Asian countries have been too far behind than East Asian countries in attracting FDI as the governments of the South Asian countries were not eager to open up their markets to the foreign companies. Pakistan was no exception to this either but in the last few years the present Pakistani government pushed through economic reforms very aggressively and now the country is attracting more and more foreign investment on a monthly basis. Now Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz is upbeat on the prospect of attracting $3.5 billion of FDI by the end of the current fiscal year. This is great news as more FDI means more jobs.
I have just one concern. Pakistan is getting a lot of FDI in the telecom sector. I would surely like to see more investment coming up in the manufacturing sector. Unemployment is one of major problems for the country and to solve this problem investment in manufacturing sector is the most important thing.
