Tegic, a subsidiary of America Online, Inc., is perhaps the first large international company that has been able to realize the market opportunity of regional Indian languages. Today, the company announced that version 7.4 of its T9 Text Input software will be available in Bangla language. The size of SMS market in India was 12.3 billion messages in 2004 and in 2010 it is expected to grow 180 billion. Thus, SMS market of regional languages is going to be an attractive one. In India, nearly 80 million people are speakers of Bangla language and there are another 150 million speakers of Bangla in the neighboring country, Bangladesh. Thus the market for Bangla SMS is a huge one. However, as far as I know, Tegic is yet to enter the Bangladeshi market. Some of the Bangladeshi mobile phone companies have already started to provide SMS support in Bangla language and Tegic may find it difficult to shine in Bangladesh.
