On October 8, 2005, one of the most terrible earthquakes of human history occurred in the Pakistan administered region of Kashmir. Pakistan government has launched a reconstruction scheme for the people affected in the earthquake. Unfortunately, the plan failed to provide house to all the people. I am quoting from the report published in Reuters:
"For Akhter Bibi, who lost her rented home and all her possessions in the quake, life is a constant battle to survive. Forced to live in a makeshift tent with her husband and eight children on a muddied roadside kerb in Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir, her future looks bleak.
"We lost everything," the 38-year-old lamented, referring to her one-room home in the village of Naizpura just outside the cy. "We've received no compensation from the government and I'm told not to expect anything."
To make the situation further worse, the house rent in other areas of Pakistan has doubled within the months that followed the earthquake. The main reason behind this is the rising demand of houses.
Pakistan government should take necessary measures to keep the rents of houses within people’s ability. This is a tale often repeated in many parts of the third world. These people were lucky to survive the earthquake but their luck just rain out.
