Wedding gift 2.0: Electricity and Road and 150,000 Guests
We often hear of rich and expensive wedding gifts like diamond ornaments, luxurious villa and so on. However, these days, we all hear of Web 2.0 and things are changing a lot in Internet. So, why not wedding gifts! Sudesh Mahato, Home (interior) Minister of Jharkhand state of India, has come up with the novel idea of furnishing the village of his bride with a new road and connection of electricity. He is an influential minister in the state and his influence was enough to persuade the state government to do these things. The villagers of the bride are really happy and excited. They are getting the things that they have dreamt about for ages. The minister is arranging his ceremony in the village area with all the grandeur of a royal wedding. Massive arrangements have been done and nearly 150,000 guests are expected to join the wedding feast.
The minister has ensured the building of a 35-kilometer (22-mile) concrete road that is joining his home with that of his bride.

The wedding is going to take place 18 June 2006 and already it has become the talk of the country. I wish that all the rich people of South Asia can learn something from this. They all the time spend absurdly huge sum of money for arranging wedding and I know that even if I write million entries in my blog they are not going to change their style in near future. So, my advice for them is- be matured and think of Wedding gift 2.0 and build roads and bridges for your villages as a part of wedding celebration.

Good idea, instead of spending their millions for themselves only, why not share it with the needy. Then, we won't need "robin hoods" who'll steal from the rich to give to the poor.

I think it is a notable incident for the people who are used to spending with their two hands in wedding. This can be an alternative way of spending through which the society will be benificial and the enjoyment of wedding will be increased. In some cases, spending becomes a show off to raise the social status and people can do this job through spending fo rthe people of the society and thus the social development cna be possible.
Thank you for your interesting article.

How fortunate for this village that one of their number should marry an influential official. It's too bad that all of the villages that are less fortunate will just have to do without a new road and electrical power.

There's nothing in this story to inidcate that the minister or his bride are paying for these improvements (only their own celebration). This is hardly the case of a wealthy man spending his own money to benefit others, but instead of an official using his influence to benefit his own (soon to be) family with government funds.

Why are you celebrating it?

This is a perfect example of why the governments of third world nations are considered by the people of first world nations to be corrupt to the point of macabre comedy. A minister is elected or appointed by a nation to perform duties for the good of ALL of that nation's people, not just for SOME of them. Roads, for example, ought to be allocated to villages on the basis of the need for the road, not on the basis of the personal associations the minister might have with the village. A queue could be made of villages requiring roads, in order of need; for this minister to advantage someone by putting them ahead of the queue also disadvantages all those who would, in fairness, have received their roads sooner. This action is stealing, and therefore official corruption, whether the gain is personal for the official or for the official's friends or colleagues or voters.

At least, that is the theory. In recent years first world democracies, particularly the USA, seem to be moving towards a more kleptocratic approach; this is an unfortunate and disgusting trend, which honest people desperately hope will be reversed. It in no way excuses this reprehensible Indian minister.

Wow. Amazing how the original poster (Razib) seems so blithely unaware of the concept of nepotism, and why it is a bad thing.

Dear Razib Amhed: Please read the reply post by aeschenkarnos carefully, then read it again, then again, and again, until you understand why this type of thing is such a bad idea.

Here is the State of Jharkhand web site with a photo of the corrupt minister (second photo)

And here are some phone numbers to call, in case you want to let them know that they are now the laughingstock of the Internet.

SkypeOut, anyone?

Dear joebob,
I am not sure why you could not get the ironic tone in my entry.

Very good ideas! Very good article!

I don't know anything about Sudesh Mahato, but on the surface I believe that what he did was indeed noble and many people can learn from his act of kindness - if indeed that is what it is.

We can sit here and speculate all day, but is it so wrong to want to help your bride's village? If you can't help a whole country, why not start somewhere? In the end, God only knows the truth...

sir, u r very inteligent man. but do works in proper manner, so that no one comment.
