Dr Ross McDonald is a teacher at The University of Auckland Business School. You can know about him in the website of this university. He recently suggested that Bhutan should ban all advertisements. Recently, a conference on media was held in Bhutan and in that Conference Dr Ross suggested this revolutionary idea in a paper he presented. I am quoting here from a report published in kuensel.com:
“Bhutan should consider banning all advertising,” says Dr. Ross McDonald, a co-coordinator of business in University of Auckland Business School in New Zealand.
Dr. Ross, who presented a paper on why adverting should be banned in Bhutan during the recent media conference in Thimphu, says the argument that jobs would be lost if advertising was limited did not apply to Bhutan, a predominantly non-industrialised society.
“And with the national policy to maximise happiness among people, advertising is a destructive force,” he says, adding that endless studies done in the west found that advertising did not have any 'pay off' in happiness."
I must admit that Dr Ross has presented his case with strong logic but I beg to differ with him. Bhutan is slowly but steadily going towards modernization. Advertisement is a part of modern economic system. Personally, I am not a big fan of any kind of advertisement either but this a part of modern economic system. Bhutan has remained isolated for ages but the time has come for them to change. Bhutan has not Internet, mobile phone, television channel and newspapers in the private sector. The time has come for Bhutan to embrace the advertisement industry too.
