No news is good news- this is applicable for Sri Lanka these days. All the news items related to Sri Lanka about violence and civil war. Death and destruction are part and parcel of every day life in the country. So, guns and bombs rule here but I feel happy to see that along with guns and bombs desktop PCs and servers are becoming common too.
After reading good news about growth rate of tourism sector in Seri Lanka, again I found good news for Sri Lankan economy. For the first time, Sri Lankan PC/Server Market could cross sale of 50,000 units in a Quarter. Springboard Research, an IT market research organization, announced yesterday that Sri Lankan PC/Server Market had 19.3% growth in the first Quarter 2006 compared to the same time in 2005. They have mentioned the contribution of two factors behind such an impressive growth. On the one hand, strong economic growth resulted into giving the people more purchasing capacity. On the other hand, increasing IT awareness is making more and more people and companies to buy PCs and servers. I also know that Sri Lankan government and the IT companies want to emulate the success of neighboring India in outsourcing.
Sri Lankan government is the major buyer of different computer accessories. Every week we can see in the media that the conflict between Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers is increasing. So, naturally, it is astonishing to see that PCs are winning the heart of many people. However, Civil war can affect this sector directly if government forgets its priority about the IT sector.
Springboard Research hopes that Sri Lankan PC/Server Market expansion will continue in the rest of 2006 and then in 2007. They expect that this market will continue to grow at the rate nearly 20% even until 2008. So, we should appreciate the Sri Lankan government and the people for continuing to invest on computer accessories amidst civil war.
