![]() Ever heard of Japanese encephalitis? This is a bad disease and can either kill you or make you mad- literally. Let me give you a definition of this disease:
"Japanese encephalitis is a disease that is spread to humans by infected mosquitoes in Asia. It is one of a group of mosquito-borne virus diseases that can affect the central nervous system and cause severe complications and even death."
(Source: http://www.dhpe.org/infect/jpenceph.html)
This is a common disease in rural parts of Asia. In some remote places of China, Japan, and Korea, you can find this disease and in the past it was a deadly disease for those countries. With continuous economic development and better healthcare system, these countries have become successful in fighting against Japanese encephalitis. Even if some people are infected with this disease, they have good treatment. So, the mosquitoes in Asia are a bit frustrated and that is why they are now getting focused on poorer countries in Asia. For the time being, their favorite destination is India. Nearly 1,800 children died in India in 2005 from Japanese encephalitis and many other children did not die but their condition is not better than death- becoming disable mentally or physically.
Vaccination is the best answer to save the children and this year, Indian government has taken it very seriously. In the last 3 months, 11 million children have been vaccinated and China has come forward generously to support Indian initiative. India does not have enough vaccine and India cannot produce enough vaccine for this disease. Secondly, India could not afford to import the required amount of vaccine either. China has provided India a huge quantity of the vaccine at a reduced price. Thus, Indian government can afford this mass vaccination program. So, millions of children in India will be safe this time.
Not every one is so lucky. Already, a number of children have died this year from Japanese encephalitis. Thousands of children living in remote village areas will perhaps be out of the vaccination program and some children will die in the coming days too.
So, you can now understand why Japanese Encephalitis is not Japanese anymore but has become totally Indian. Needless to say that Japanese Encephalitis has become a major headache for Indian economy too.
