In some countries in the world, monarchs often portray themselves as having some divine relationship. Many Nepalese believe that their King is an incarnation of Hindu god, Vishnu and that is perhaps why, one after another King could rule so easily here even in the 20th century. The system worked fine for the Kings until 2006. However, the pro-democracy movement of April 2006 has changed the landscape in Nepal and the political parties are now busy in scrapping most of the privileges enjoyed by the King and the royal family. Now, the Parliament has decided to separate the Royal family from its religious privilege.
Until now, Nepalese King was the patron of the temple of Lord Pashupatinath and the queen was the chair of Pashupatinath Area Development Trust, an organization that looked after this area. It is the holiest place for the people of Nepal and thousands of people visit the temple everyday. They donate money, jewelry and other things to the temple. Even it is possible to donate money online by using credit cards. Since the King and the Queen were in charge, they appointed their cronies to look after the temple and thus plundered the wealth of this holy temple easily. Since, there is no audited record, plundering was very easy for them.
Many people did not like this plundering and this temple is considered to be holy to people of three religions: Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. So, now the Parliament has decided to change the law and make the democratically elected Prime Minister as the patron and Information and Tourism Minister as the chair of Pashupatinath Area Development Trust. An investigation is going on the mismanagement of the fund of the temple and from now the wealth of the temple will be used for the welfare of the people.
Thus, the King is not only incarnation of God but he is also the incarnation of corruption and mismanagement.
