If you are from a developed country then I am sure you will feel annoyed with me for this news item. You may wonder whether consumers getting CDMA mobile phone is news worthy at all. For a country like Nepal, it is big news. Nepal Telecom is going to distribute mobile phones based on CDMA technology by the end of this month (July 2006). Initially, only 12-14 thousands phones will be offered in or around the capital city Kathmandu. As a result, consumers will have better facility now.
The main problem in Nepal is that Nepalese government is yet to realize the importance of mobile phone and that is why it is not encouraging foreign investment and private sector investment. According to a news in cellular-news.com, "Statistics from The Mobile World note that nepal Telecom has just under 300,000 subscribers while rival operator, Mero Mobile has 86,000 customers." Most people in rural areas still out of the coverage of the mobile phone. In this blog, I have written about the huge growth in the mobile phone industry in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. It seems that Nepalese government is yet to realize the important of mobile phone from its neighbors.
