Will Malaysian support boost Pakistan's sea food industry?

Malaysia, one of the Asian tigers, has agreed to provide technical support to Pakistan seafood industry, one of the rising industries in Pakistan. According to Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong, Secretary-General, Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), his country is ready to provide technological assistance for packaging and frozen food.

This the first time a Pakistani Seafood business delegation visited Malaysia. In the fiscal year of 2005-2006, Pakistan’s seafood Industry set a new record in seafood export. According to a report published in southasianmedia.net, despite various setbacks, such as, high price of diesel, fear of ban from European Union, the total amount of export was $180 million. The exporters were expecting a total of $165 million. This is really a great achievement for Pakistani seafood Industry. The Pakistani government has started to give attention to this sector.

Seafood industry has huge potential in Pakistan. The country has five major rivers and the banks of the rivers are a very good sight for shrimp fanning. In addition, huge number of tuna fish, cuttle fish and fish under squid species are found in large number in Pakistan. Malaysia is technologically advanced in many aspects, hence, Pakistani Seafood Industry can learn a lot from Malaysians. I think the Pakistani Seafood exporters have taken a good decision and the Pakistani government should provide them incentives, loans and other kinds of support.
