Bhutan: 2 Greedy Men falling to the Nigerian E-mail Scam
I guess almost every week, I receive emails from Nigerian scammers who promise me to transfer $10 million for nothing. Everyone knows about this scam and no one believes them. Well, you know that there some exceptional people in every place and they are foolish and greedy. So, this is the story of 2 Bhutanese men who actually fell for this foolish scam. They lost US$14,000 and got nothing and in the end ended up in prison for carrying fake currency. Thus greed brought disaster for these two men. One of them is a businessman and the other works in Bhutan Power Corporation. I am quoting from a report of Kuensel Online:

The two men had paid US$14,000 to the fraudsters as handling charges when they met the fraudsters in a hotel in Malaysia. While in Malaysia, the fraudsters had presented suitcases containing US$ notes, but the notes were coloured black. “They were told that the notes were coated with a special substance in order to smuggle it out of the country,” a police report stated. “The fraudsters demonstrated cleaning the notes with a liquid and made the victims exchange the notes to convince themselves."

Believe me, $14,000 is quite a fortune in Bhutan and with this money you can manage your expenses for many months. So, you can easily understand that these two men are too much greedy. Personally, I feel hardly any sympathy for them. If they were ordinary people, I could think that they were confused but they were businessman and government employee. So, they should have known that only fake money is colored black.

Now, Bhutanese government is trying to create awareness among people about the fraudulent emails coming from Nigeria and other countries. I know some people will still fall for these emails.

Crazy that those men would actually follow through with the scam. Thanks, Razib!

Easton, That's why I love to write about South Asia. It is always full of surprises.

Hi Razib, I am a Nigerian living in Nigeria. I don't really beleive the Nigerian scam affects only the greedy and foolish. See what I wrote about it on my blog.

I always get at least 5 of those e-mail scams a day in my "public e-mail" (the e-mail I show in my blog for the readers who wish to contact me). I'm not sure how people believe these promises of big money and transfer of "donation" money from some heirs of huge fortune. It's too good to be true.

I guess, it's true, there's one born every minute. I've gotten these types of emails as well as it amazes me that anyone would fall for them.

I'm just amazed people can be taken in be this type of scam.

Maybe I'm just way too skeptical, but I've always lived by the "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is" rule, and it has suited me just fine so far.

Too bad for those men. Sure, they should have used more common sense, but hey--it's hard to fault people for being trustworthy. Especially if it's the first time they've encountered this crazy scam.

At least some good is coming from it, though -- in the form of the government stepping in and trying to raise awareness...

We have been recieving these in the US for years, at least 5 that I know of, I can't believe they are still trying it. However, it seems to be working for them.

Thanks Razib. To paraphrase the immortal words of Forest Gump: Greedy is as greedy does.

Bayou Bill

I've noticed lately that they've moved from Nigeria to Egypt! Still the same dignitary w/ money problems however.

Think you might be a bit confused there Razib. Having someone steal any money from you, never mind $14,000 doesn't make YOU greedy. It makes the thieves scum. I don't understand how you're blaming the victims of these fraudsters. Being naive doesn't mean you should be victimised.

Mr. Bombastic,
Thanks for your comment. Well, if these people were ordinary persons then I would not call them greedy. But one of them is a government employee and another is a businessman. They are experienced persons. They travelled to Malaysia and they were quite aware that they were doing something illegal (carrying real/fake foreign currency in huge ammount).

Mr. Bombastic, if those two "victims" weren't greedy enough to want that scam money in the first place, bypassing normal hard work and regular - and legal - methods of earning money, they wouldn't have run into this problem. If they were little old ladies who were naive, I would have sympathy. But like Razib said, these were business men, fully aware of how business really works. No, I have no sympathy for them either.

In the good old days before the Nigerian scams were passed around via email, they were sent via fax, going back to at least 1990 with one client I had. I've been receiving them via email since, oh, at least the mid-1990s. They've been around a long, long time.

This scam did not get me, but I almost fell for another "Nigerian Scam" called lottery winner, actually originated from United kingdom. There was good-looking phishing web site and office of winner verification. I won 25 millions of British Pounds, it was hard to realize that I obviously didn't win, additionally I was asked to pay(10.OOO$) for getting the prize money.

The mesage is clear: do not fall for it.
