Milind Soman: There was this beautiful princess who was at the age of getting married. She had been shown many handsome princes but did not like any of them. At last, a sexy good looking young man from India came and won her heart. Readers, this was the story of “Made in India”, the popular music video of Alisha Chinoi, the “Indian Madonna”, and that “sexy good looking” guy was Milind Soman, the first Indian male supermodel. Still now, he is one of the most popular models of India. Milind never thought of becoming a model. He was an aspiring swimmer. After having some problems with the officials, he left his dream of becoming a swimmer and got into modeling at the age of 24. His first appearance as a model was in the campaign of Thackersey fabric. The project was very successful and he earned Rs. 50,000, which was very high at that time. Since then, he never had to look back. Milind is now trying to become a successful actor.
John Abraham: Many of you may know John Abraham as one of the heartthrobs of Bollywood but he started his career as a model. I first saw him in a music video of Pankaj Udhas’s song (Yun Mere Khat Ka). In that video, he was playing the role of a young man who first fell in love. Like Milind, John also did not have any thought of getting into modeling. This handsome guy, son of a Malayee Christian father and a Persian mother, was working as a media planner in an ad agency. After winning the second position in Gladrags Manhunt Contest in 1999, he did not have to look back. His campaign with Provogue, an Indian clothing Industry, was very successful. In 2003, he made his debut in Bollywood through “Jism”. The movie was not very successful but made him recognized as a talented actor. In 2004, “Dhoom” where he played the role of villain, was a big hit in the box office.
Arjun Rampal: After watching his second film “Dewanapan”, I thought, this guy would be the next "Salman Khan" of Bollywood. He studied in a boarding school and never bothered about his looks or face or looking good or smart. Arjun started modeling at the age of seventeen. At that time, he was studying in Hindu college. Rohit Bal, one of the most famous Indian fashion designers, saw him in a discotheque and offered him to work as a model. He worked as a model for six years and became very successful. In 1996, he decided to get into films. In 2002, he won the Award of the International Indian Film Academy for Face of the Year.
Dino Morea: This guy has two things in common with John Abraham. First, he participated in the 1999 Gladrags Manhunt Contest and won the competition. Second, like John, he is a mixed breed; Italian father and Indian mother. I first saw Dino in the ad of Live-In Jeans, and it is one of my all time favorite ads. He did music videos and ads and achieved success in both of them. However, his acting career had not been very successful. Still, he is one of the most good looking actors at present in Bollywood and a great model.
Jatin Grewal: This handsome guy from Nainital comes from a very normal family. He started modeling when he was doing his graduation in Chandigarh. Then, he won the Glad Rags Manhunt Competition. After finishing his MBA from Pune, he told his family that he would go to Mumbai for work. There he got his break as a model. He worked in ad campaigns of Palmolive, Kamasutra, Raymonds, Thums-up, Cinthol, Levis, Indigo Nation, OCM, Taj Hotels and so on.
He has done music videos and ramps and television ads and was successful in everything. Jas Arora is a Punjabi and like a typical Punjabi, he loves to eat. His favorite dishes are Tandoori Chicken and Rajma Chawaal. His main assets are his innocent face and beautiful smile. He has done more than hundred ads and numerous music videos. The Punjabi music video with Malaika Arora “Gurnalo Ishq Mita” and “Mera Laung Gawacha” with Dipti Bhatnagar made him very popular in India.
By winning the Graviera Man of the Year in 1994, Bikram Saluja walked into the glamourous world of modeling. He did ads, music videos, and plays and now trying to make his mark in Bollywood. He made his debut in 2000, with “Fiza”. Among his popular music videos there are “Tere Bin Jeena Nahin” by Bali Brahmbhatt and Asha Bhosle’s “Parde Mein Rahne Do”.
He is a very successful model and now a successful actor. His main features are: an athletic body, a great height of six feet, and the look of a rough man. Son of the former Police commissioner of Delhi, Rahul Dev is also referred as “The Czar of the modeling circuit”. I enjoyed his performance in “Champion”. He played the character of a psycho killer. He has worked as a model of all kinds male toiletry products. His elder brother Mukul Dev is also an actor.
The best thing about Khalid is his innocent face. Looking at him one would feel that they know this guy. These two qualities made him one of the most popular models of India. As a model, mostly he did ads: Cadbury’s Perk, Red Label Tea, Ariel, Bharati Telecom, ICICI, Ponds, Gillette and many more. He worked in several music videos such as, Colonial cousins (Rhythm of the world), Jagjit Singh (seher). His first movie was “Jogger’s Park”.
His childhood dream was to join the army because his father was in the army. When he grew up, he wanted to become an actor and unfortunately became a male supermodel! This is the story of Inder Mohan Sudan. At first look, you would feel that this guy is the real life version of a beautifully sculptured Greek statue. He used to do bodybuilding in his spare time but had to change a lot after he came to modeling. So far, he worked as a ramp model for all the major Indian designers like JJ Valaya, Suneet Varma, Rohit Bal, Shahab Durazi, Krishna Mehta and so on.
Indian models have many opportunities to earn money. Along with regular television ads and ramp modeling, a successful model can also work in music videos, hindi serials, stage shows and last but not the least, movies. Among these models, you can see that many are trying to get into movies. Modeling has now become a great platform for Indian boys and girls from where they can launch themselves as actors or actresses. Not only in Bollywood, this trend is also found in Hollywood. So, if you want to become an actor, no problem, start with modeling, who knows? One fine day, you may be approached by some top film directors and producers of Bollywood.
