Rain: Blessing and Curse for Bangladeshi Economy
(I like group writing projects and in the past I have I have noticed that participating in any group writing project can increase exposure in the blogosphere. I am writing this entry as a part of  AW Blogchain: #5.)

Cath Smith in her blog, Curiouser and Curiouser, has talked about the Weather in Ohio. Well, since SouthAsiaBiz is a business a blog, I like to talk about the impact of weather in Bangladeshi economy.

Bangladesh is perhaps one of the greenest countries in the world. There are six seasons in this country- Summer, Rainy season, Autumn, Late Autumn, Winter and Spring. Rainfall is vital for the economy of this country as most people are farmers by profession and they depend on rain for a good harvest. It is interesting rain brings flood too and every year a significant portion of Bangladesh (mainly in the rural areas) remain under water for a few weeks. Sometime, flood becomes too much devastating and causes a lot of damage to our economy. So, rain is both a blessing and a curse for the people here. You cannot live with it and you cannot live without it either. This year, there is less rainfall than average and it will badly affect many farmers.
If you are planning to visit Bangladesh then the best time is October-March. There is hardly any rain and the weather is much tolerable during this period. If you are fond of traveling then Bangladesh can be a great destination. Here are 12 reasons to travel Bangladesh

I wonder what we can find in Peggy's blog, The Road Less Traveled, next.

I hear about the flooding in Bangladesh and major devastation - it always worries me. We've been having a lot of rain, lately, too - monsoon season, of course - and areas here are also under water. Sometimes it's severe, sometimes, not so much.

It's the change in climate that really struck me - Ohio is more severe than Scotland. Bangladesh, more severe than Ohio. I guess there are places that differ even more drastically (but I'm not sure I'd like to go!).

I guess we're all ruled by the weather, but it sounds like Bangladesh lives right on the edge.

Nice job with the post, by the way! :)

Razib, it's one of my life's greatest desires to see Bangladesh. It's the land of my grandparents, and while I've seen it many times through their eyes, I can't wait to get a glimpse first hand. Thanks for the post.

Hi Razib,

It's too bad there wasn't some kind of happy medium between the two in order to balance things out.

The whole weather cycle around the world is so messed up, due mainly to the fact of how man fails to take care of things over the centuries. :-(

Great post. Thanks for sharing.

You know what? The same is true in our country. It always rains from June to September sometimes even upto December. We've suffered flooding, super typhoons, and landslides by these constant rains even during Christmas. And it really hurts our economy every time a disaster strikes. But when it doesn't rain it's also a problem for farmers because it ends up in drought.

I like the description of your seasons. We joke in Alaska that there are four seasons; almost winter, winter, still winter and construction...

Great post.

Living in the southern part of the United States, I can well relate to what to little, or to much rain can do to an economy. Not only does it affect our farmers but our Tourist revenue.
Suprising how something we consider mundane can be so important.

I'd love to see all those sights. I need to get rich so I can travel to all these wonderful places.

If rain were a tradeable coomodity, Bangladesh could trade the excess to Australia and both our countries would benefit.

That's awesome. I'm going to Bangladesh.

Here in SoCal rain = winter. The roads get really dangerous because no one knows how to drive when it's moist out and the roads are oily and slippery. I don't know what would happen if we were under water for a few weeks - maybe we'd all get a holiday!

Here In NY we have four seasons, winter, rainy season, summer, and tree leaf color changing season.

I prefer snow to rain, but hey.

Seems even when the number of seasons change, some things stay the same. We've had quite a few concerns over draughts and flooding even though I live on the opposite side of the world.

I too liked the comments about the six seasons. I had a friend in grade school (ages upon ages ago) who's family was from Montana. Her father used to joke that there were two seasons there, winter and July. I know this year I felt we skipped spring and went right into summer...

I've been interested in Bangladesh since meeting a girl from there when I was in college. She was a great girl and boy was she beautiful!

I agree with BK. In the South, how much rain can effect a farmers crops but tornados play a good part in that too. I think there are like an average of 50 tornados each season that touch down. If your farm is one of the unlucky ones to be in the path of one of those, it can be a major set back.
