Matsutake (a kind of mushroom) is very popular in Japan. According to Wikipedia:
“The Japanese Matsutake at the beginning of the season, which is the highest grade, can go up to $2000 per kilogram. In contrast, the average value for imported Matsutake is about $90 per kilogram.”
Bhutan has this mushroom in some of the rural areas and Bhutanese traders earn a decent amount of money by exporting matsutake in Japan. Well, the good days are over for Bhutanese traders. They are facing numerous problems:
1. The price of Bhutanese Matsutake is falling.
2. Bhutanese traders finding it difficult to collect matsutake in the time of high demand in Japanese market.
3. Chinese and Korean traders are supplying matsutake in larger number than the past.
4. The traders of China and Korea can supply matsutake in the same way (they are collected) where as from Bhutan it takes 48 hours for the mushrooms to reach Japan.
