
The last city of my Indian city series is Delhi. It is the sixth most populous metropolis in the world with a population of 15.3 million. The city area covers National Capital Territory of Delhi and the satellite towns of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Noida, and Ghaziabad. New Delhi, the capital of India, is an urban area within the metropolis of Delhi.
The most noticeable feature of Delhi is its rich historical background. There are only few cities in South Asia that has such a rich history like Delhi. Delhi has remained the capital of India during the rule of various empires. The main feature of Delhi is that it is situated between Aravalli Hills and the Yamuna River. This water way connects Delhi with the Gangetic planes. At present, Delhi has 60,000 recognized monuments.
Because of its historical importance and monuments, Delhi has become a great tourist attraction. Every year, tourists from all over the world come to Delhi. Tourism has become a flourishing industry of Delhi.
Delhi is one of the most important commercial centers of South Asia. Its GDP is estimated to be Rs. 478 billion. Every year, hundreds and thousands of people come here in search of jobs or starting business from all over the country. Along with tourism, other service oriented industries such as IT, telecommunications, hotel, banking, media etc are situated in Delhi. The literacy rate of the people of Delhi is very high. This is another reason, service oriented industries are doing well in this city.
Textile and handloom, handicrafts, are some other major industries of Delhi.
