I was going through the list of Winners 2006 of World Travel Awards. Maldives has been hailed as the Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination. It is good news for the country. The economy of Maldives depends a lot on the tourism sector. This award will help the country’s economy too as it will attract some more visitors to travel here. Travel Daily News reported:
“The Maldives has been awarded the “World’s Leading Dive Destination” and “Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination” at the World Travel Awards 2006. The Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Dr. Mahamood Shougee accepted the Awards on behalf of the Maldivian tourism industry at this year’s World Travel Awards held at the Beaches in Turks & Caicos.
In addition, in the Regional category Hilton Maldives Resort and Spa won the “Indian Ocean’s Leading Resort” award and Soneva Gili Resort and Spa won the “Indian Ocean’s Leading Spa Resort” award.”
Some credit should go to the government of Maldives. The government has created all the modern facilities for the tourists. The Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB) has perhaps got the best website on travel and tourism in Asia. I have never visited Maldives but if I can afford it, someday I will surely go there.
What about you?
