Mumbai: The Island City

Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra. It is the fifth most populous metropolitan area of the world and the most populous city of India. Located on the west coast of Maharashtra, it is home to 13 million people. If the suburbs outside the city limits are included then 20 million people. Mumbai is also one of the most expensive cities of India.  

Mumbai is basically an archipelago, a group of seven islands. Mumbai established itself as a major business center in colonial period, after the British East India Company established their first port. The population of the island jumped from 10,000 to 160,000 at the initial stage. After the opening of Suez Canal in 1869, Mumbai became one of the largest seaports of the Arabian Sea. Since then, the city became an important business center observing a large influx of people from different places. 

Today, the first and foremost identity of Mumbai is that it is the film city of India. Known as Bollywood, it is the second biggest film industry in the world after Hollywood. This thriving cinema industry has made Mumbai the city of fame and glamour.  

The headquarters of many important government institutions such as, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and India Government Mint are situated in Mumbai. Among major industries there are: textile mills, seaport, diamond polishing, healthcare, and IT companies.

Mumbai is one of the largest seaports of Arabian Sea. Due to lack of parking space, people of Mumbai depends of public transport. There are two railway divisions in Mumbai: Central Railway and Western Railway. Railway forms the backbone of the city’s communication. Everyday, hundreds of people living outside the city limits come into the city by train. Mumbai has an international airport named Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport and Santacruz Airport is reserved for domestic flights.
