It is an interesting idea. Until now, Nepal did not allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in the media sector. Now, a media commission has recommended allowing up to 49% FDI in media. I am quoting from a report of Zee News:
“A high-level media commission has recommended that Nepal allow up to 49 per cent foreign direct investment in its media sector
Parliament member Radheshyam Adhikari, head of the 13 member government-constituted commission has submitted its report to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.
It has however suggested that foreign investment should be allowed only in the national level media, and not in regional or local level media.”
Now, we have to wait and see whether the government accepts the recommendation of the media commission and allow FDI. Personally, I think that Nepal government should allow foreign investment in this sector but must set up a regulatory body to control it. Media is a very influential thing and if it falls into the wrong hand, a nation may suffer badly.
