Six things I LOVE and six things I HATE about Nepal

To the rest of the world, Nepal is known as a poor and least developed country. I do not deny the fact that the country is over populated, has poor infrastructure, and most of the people are poor. Still, this country has few positive aspects. Here are some of them:

1. Although small country, Nepal has a diverse landscape. The land area of Nepal can be divided into three regions – the Himalayas, the hills and the terai region. The Himalayan region covers the northern part of the country. The hilly region is situated on the south of the mountain region and the terai region is used for farming and agriculture.

2. Recently, the Nepalese government has decided to stop all the private schools and follow one education system. I am a supporter of unified education system. I welcome this movement. Private schools are very expensive and they admit children who are from well off families. Money is the major factor to get into these schools, not brain.

3. Out of the top ten mountains of the world, seven is situated in Nepal. The tallest mountain of the world, Mount Everest, is situated in this country. Every year, hundreds of mountain climbers come here to climb the mountains.

4. Nepal has a very developed tourism sector. The best thing about Nepal’s tourism is that it has a wide range of facilities. If you are adventurous and thrill seeker, then there are various extreme sport facilities: trekking, rafting, gliding etc. The capital of Kathmandu has all kinds of facilities for western travelers. If you are looking for spiritual enlightenment, there are many temples and monasteries around the country. Nepal is also the birth place of Lord Buddha.

5. After a long period of struggle, Nepal has achieved democracy. Until now, the country was ruled by the king and it was more or less like dictatorship. In the history of all the countries of the world, dictators were hated by the people. King Gyanendra had the same fate.

6. In the present day world, being poorly industrialized is considered to be a bad aspect for any country. From my point of view, this is a positive quality of Nepal. Due to lower rate of industrialization, Nepal has been able to preserve its natural diversity and natural beauty.

Six things I hate:

1. The ROYAL family is a ROYAL headache for the people of Nepal. The King of Nepal has no considerations for the people whose hard earned money he wastes after his luxurious belongings. King Gyanendra and his fellow men wasted people’s money to make their lives better. Still now, they tax payers are paying for the king.

2. Being a small, landlocked and underdeveloped country, Nepal has to depend on India. India culturally dominates the country. Indian movies are very popular in Nepal. As a result, Nepalese movie makers imitate the Indian film makers and end up making poor quality movies.

3. In order to make profits, various business organizations bring celebrities from India. This is a bad practice. Nepalese business organizations should promote the domestic film industry. It would help to revive the film industry. As a result, more films will be produced and more good film means more tax and more jobs for the people.

4. Poverty and illiteracy is a serious problem in Nepal and the government is not effective enough to eradicate it. According to a report published by the World Food Program, 47% percent of the total population of Nepal suffers from hunger. Two million of these people are children. Due to poverty, children are forced to work. At present, there are one million child labors engaged in various works in Nepal.

5. Another serious problem is the right of women. Nepalese women face all kinds of discriminations. The literacy rate is very low. The condition of the women of rural areas is the worst. Even the Royal family women are ill treated.

6. During the monsoon season, heavy rain causes land slide and flood, which kills people and damage resources in Nepal. This year, the same thing has happened in the Western region of Nepal. The monsoon rain caused land slide and flood. However, the government has not yet devised any effective plan that could decrease the damage.
