
Rising oil price is hurting the Bhutanese economy too. Indian government is providing kerosene at a cheaper rate for the rural people of Bhutan. As a result, kerosene is cheaper than diesel in Bhutan. So, bad traders are taking advantage and mixing cheap kerosene with expensive diesel and adulterated fuel is causing problem for many people. In fact, adulterating of fuel is only increasing in Bhutan and this is becoming a major concern for Bhutanese government.
Lifting the subsidy seems to be a good option at this moment. However, Bhutanese government must be careful that the poor people do not suffer. Actually, giving subsidy to fuel is becoming a dilemma for all the South Asian countries. On the one hand, the poor people cannot afford to buy fuel at a high rate. On the other hand, fuel subsidy becomes a great burden on the national economy.
