Biratnagar: The Industrial city of Nepal

Biratnagar is the second largest city of Nepal. It is also known as the industrial city of Nepal. Located near the southeastern border with India this city is home to 166,674 people. It is also the administrative center of Morang district of Koshi zone.

The local population consists of two tribal groups: Danuwars and Tharu. Both these groups do not have much dissimilarity in terms of lifestyle and culture.

After Kathmandu, Biratnagar is the second most important commercial and economic center of Nepal. The city is an industrial area. The first large industry in Nepal, Biratnagar Jute Mills, was set up here in 1936. Among other major industries there are: chemical, edible oil, steel, liquor, and soap factory. Zipper factory is also another major factory situated on the northern part of the city.

Biratnagar also serves as a transit point between India and Nepal. The rural areas situated on the outskirts of the city are used for rice production.

Each area of Nepal has something to offer to the tourists and Biratnagar is no exception. The trekkers first have to come to Biratnagar for trekking in Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain of the world. The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a great spot for bird watching. The Koshi Barrage on the Koshi River is another great tourist spot.

Among other major tourist spots there are: Baraha Kshetra, Biratnagar Haat Bazaar, and Jogbani.

Last but not least, the temple of Lord Baraha, situated in Baraha Kshtera is a pilgrimage site for the Hindus.

Aren't you guys going to talk about Yunus? Or about his Grameen Bank? That's related to your site and also what about the recent Google acquisition of YOuTube? Did you know there's a Bengali involved in that? He's one of the co-founders!

Thanks for your comment. SouthAsiaBIz was among the first few blogs to cover the news of Nobel Peace Prize 2006. Just do a Google search and you will see an entry of this blog in the first or second page. In the coming days, we hope to cover more of this matter.
Thanks for the info about Google's acquisition of YouTube.
