Since poverty is common in South Asian countries, every year, thousands of workers go abroad in search of a better life. Bad guys take advantage and often promise them of good jobs with good salaries but after the workers go to Middle East or Malaysia, they see a different picture. For Nepalese workers, it is the same story. Many of them have suffered fraud and have lost a lot of money. However, Nepalese government is trying to act tough and it seems that the effort of the government is paying off. People's Daily Online reported:
“The number of complaints lodged against unauthorized individual foreign employment agents in Nepal declined dramatically by 48 percent in the first two months of the current fiscal year starting in mid-July.
Thursday's report of the Department of Labor and Employment Promotion (DoLEP) stated that a total of 69 complaints were lodged against individual agents during the period, as against 135 cases registered in the same period last year.
The victims, who filed cases against individual foreign employment agents demanded compensation amounting to 17.85 million Nepali rupees (244,520 US dollars) in the review period, compared to 36.79 million rupees (503,772 dollars) of the similar period last year.”
I am happy with this news. I hope that the governments of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka can learn from the Nepalese experience. It’s really tragic that you sell your house just to go abroad and then after going there you suffer double.
