
Surrounded by trees and mountains, Gangtok is the largest city and capital of Sikkim. The word “Gangtok” has different meanings- lofty hill, top of a hill. Situated at a height of 5600 ft, at the extended portion of mountain ridge, Gangtok has clean environment, beautiful natural surrounding. This is a great destination for eco tourists, and honeymooners.
Gangtok is situated near the Himalayas on the southeast side of Sikkim. Though mountain area, the weather of Gangtok remains mild all the year. Gangtok has five seasons: summer, monsoon, autumn. During monsoon or rainy season landslides happen.
The forest contains various trees and plants. Major tree species include: poplar, birch, oak, elm, bamboo. Flowers species include: sunflower, marigold, poinsettia etc.
Nepalese, who settled in Gangtok during the British rule, are the majority here. There are the natives who are known as Lepchas and Bhutias. Immigrated Tibetans also make up a good portion of the population. Then there are the Bengalis, Marwarees, and Biharis.
Poor communication and transportation system is the major reason why there are not many manufacturing plants in this region. Government is the largest employer in Gangtok. The Sikkim Police force is a big source of work for local people. Gangtok has a very thriving tourism industry. Through tourism Gangtok earns $9.7 million each year. Handicrafts, locally produced alcohol, watch-making are some of the major industries here.
Clean air, mild temperature, and beautiful natural surroundings are the trademark of Gangtok city which makes it an ideal tourist spot. Here are some of the major tourist spots of Gangtok:- Deer Park: Also known as Rustomji Park, it is situated near the new secretariat. Different kinds of local animals are kept here.
- Do-Drul Chorten: A stupa containing 108 prayer wheels, one of the most important stupas of Sikkim.
- Government institute of cottage industries: Created to promote local handicrafts. Thankas, hand carved wooden tables, woolen carpets, hand painted masks etc can be found here.
- Kangchendzonga National Park: Situated near the third highest mountain of the world this National park offers great natural sceneries.
- Kechopari Lake: "Kechopari Lake" means "Wishing Lake". The lake is surrounded by green trees and the water is very clear.
- Other major tourist site includes: Labrang monastery, Lachung Pemayangtse Monastery, Phurchachu reshi hot springs, Research Institute of Tibetology, Rumtek monastery, Tasuklakhang - The Royal Chapel, The Ridge Tsomgo Lake Etc.
