Karachi: City of Quaid

Earlier I wrote about, ten important cities of India. From today, I will be writing about the important cities of Pakistan. The first city that I am going to write about is Karachi. In these short posts, it is not possible to include all the details about the cities. If you have any new information and feel like it should be included here, please, feel free to include them in your comments.

Karachi is the capital of Sindh and the birthplace of Quaid-e-Azam MA Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. This is why, the city is also known as the “City of Quaid.” Located by the Arabian Sea and home to more than 18 million people, Karachi is the most populous city of Pakistan. The development of Karachi began in colonial period. Before that, it was a fishing village. After independence, a large number of immigrants (from India) settled in Karachi.

Karachi, the first capital of Pakistan, has many tourist attractions. These includes: Liaqat Hall, Wazir mansion; the birthplace Jinnah, Mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam, Zoo Garden, Karachi Zoo and so on.

Karachi has the highest literacy rate in Pakistan. The city has the highest number of universities and colleges which attract students from all over Pakistan.

Karachi may not be the capital of Pakistan anymore but it is known as the financial capital of Pakistan. Karachi generates the majority portion of Pakistan’s GDP and 65% of the country’s national revenue. All the major banks of Pakistan have their offices in Karachi. Reputed multinational companies and foreign business organizations are headquartered in this city. Karachi is also the IT hub of Pakistan. Various electronic media companies and call centers are situated in Karachi.

Karachi contains a large number of manufacturing industries which includes: textile, pharmaceuticals, steels and automobiles. Famous automobile industries like Toyota, Suzuki, have their manufacturing plants in this city.

Karachi also has a thriving cottage and fishing industry. There are two fishing harbors: Karachi fish harbor and Korangi fish harbor. The fisheries industry employs 300,000 people.

Karachi is well connected to other countries by air and waterways. The Jinnah International Airport is the busiest airport of Pakistan. There are two seaports in Karachi: Port of Karachi and Port Qasim. These two seaports serve both Pakistan and Afghanistan. There are two railway stations: Karachi City Station and Karachi Cantonment Station.
